Not Just A Rock
A recent walk on the sand at Cannon Beach led me to the infamous Haystack Rock. It was a beautiful evening on the Oregon coast, the tide was out and there laid bare was a fragile eco system of sea life.
I noticed A-frame signs posted around the area with people surrounding them. One said “Birds Only Beyond This Point” which brought a smile to my face. Another read, “Life Here Is Fragile” Yet another, “Sensitive Ecosystem: Please Stay Off The Rocks.” As I walked along I saw a sign with a picture of Haystack Rock on it. As I read the sign, the words around the picture felt almost intrustive. It said, “I’m Not Just A Rock. I’m A Home.”
I’m Not Just A Rock. I’m A Home.
As I walked on, I began to ask questions and wonder. Why were these words so meaningful in the moment?
Soon, other words began to flow.
You’re not just a pastor/spiritual director. You are a beloved person created by God.
You’re not just a leader. You are a child of God.
You’re not just an organizer/mom/wife. You are one in whom God delights.
You’re not just a teacher. You are dearly loved by God.
You’re not just a rock. You are home to the Holy Spirit of God within you.
Remember, you are not just (fill in the blank).
Listen. Let the silence resonate.
What is God saying to you about who you are?
